Northside Cares for the Earth
Northside has made a committment to be more eco-friendly in as many ways as it can. It has participated in the town's recycling program for years. The Fellowship Committee switched from disposable cups to resusable coffee mugs and plastic glasses for Lemonade on the Lawn and other events. Monday Night Supper meals are served in containers made from bamboo and other materials that allow them to be composted or recycled. There is a collection bin for the New River Creative Reuse Center that allows members to donate materials that can be used for crafts and other classroom activities instead of disposing of the items in the trash. The Adult Forum Sunday School recently heard from Sarah Windes, a member of Blacksburg Presbyterian and a member of the Presbytery Earth Care Subcommittee, about resources available from the Presbytery. She also shared a list of books for study. Forest Arnold has added three books to the Northside library:
Grounded, Finding God in the World, A Spiritual Revolution by Diana Butler Bass
Sacred Acts, How Churches Are Working To Protect Earth's Climate by Mallory McDuff
Earth Gospel, A Guide to Prayer for God's Creation by Sam Hamilton Poore

Monday Night Supper
This week's meal was chicken fajita casserole, corn, coleslaw, fruit, and cookies. We served 68 meals.
Thanks to our volunteers this week: Marge and George, Barbara, Alex, Linda, Susan, and Heidi and Bruce.
Bag Collection: If you have groceries delivered from Kroger, please save the large delivery bags and bring them to the church. If you have friends who get deliveries and don't know what to do with the bags, we can use them. They are the right size to pack multiple meals for delivery to the parking lot. It is a good way to recycle the bags, reducing the need to order brown paper shopping bags.
Volunteers to help prepare and pack meals are always welcome and needed. |
