The Week Ahead
The fourth ecumenical Lenten supper is tonight, March 18, at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, starting at 5:45 pm. Pam Phillips, minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church, will deliver the message in the service following the meal.
This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. Linda is continuing her sermon series on The Great Ends of The Church. Her Lenten message is “For the Sake of the World: The Great Ends of the Church” with The promotion of social righteousness as the theme on Sunday. The choir will sing "Amazing Grace." The chiming choir will also play as part of the service of the Tenebrae, the extinguishing of a candle each week until Maundy Thursday. We will also celebrate communion. Lucian's Bible Study class is nearing the end of its study of the book of John. The Adult Forum Sunday School class will be led by Len Shabman via Zoom. Len will talk about his church in Washington, D.C., New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, and "What was Abraham Lincoln’s faith journey at NYAPC and how did it affect his path to the emancipation proclamation?"
Linda's sermon topic for the final part of the Great Ends: • The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world (3/29)
Mark your calendar: The memorial service for Ron Pearson will be on Saturday, March 21, at 10 a.m. This was rescheduled after January weather resulted in cancellation.

"Just One Can" Food Drive
It is time for the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry "Just One Can" food drive. This is a town-wide effort to collect 30,000 cans to help ensure our neighbors have reliable access to nutritious food. As the number of families seeking assistance continues to grow, the pantry food-purchasing budget can no longer keep pace with demand. Reaching the goal of 30,000 cans would generate an estimated $50,000 in food value, the equivalent of four months of canned food purchases for the pantry.
One CAN truly makes a measurable difference. The goal is simple and achievable. If every resident of Blacksburg donated just one can, this would meet or exceed the target. This campaign is built on the idea that small, individual acts multiplied across a community create substantial impact.
The food drive runs from March 16 through March 31. There will be numerous drop-off points around town. You can also bring donations to Northside and they will be delivered to the Food Pantry.

Food Pantry Grant Last fall, the Session submitted a grant application to the 2 Cents A Meal program on behalf of the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry. The Presbytery committee approved a grant of $1,865.56 to support the program. Andrea Muscatello, Director of the food pantry, has plans for the grant, as outlined in a letter of thanks for the grant.
For the past three years, the Pantry has operated a summer food program to help support children when school is not in session. In our county, 36% of children qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, and the need for additional food support during the summer months is significant. Until recently, this program was funded through a grant that expired in 2025. As we prepare for the summer of 2026, we began exploring new ways to continue this important effort.
We are pleased to share that your grant will support the launch of a new partnership with The Outreach Program. This ministry provides nutritious meals that can be packaged on-site by volunteers and distributed to families through the pantry. The meals require only hot water to prepare, making them simple and accessible for children. These are shelf stable meals and cost approximately 40 cents per meal.
Your gift will help make possible a community meal-packing event where volunteers will assemble these meals for distribution to children and families served by the pantry. In addition to providing food, this event will bring members of our community together in a shared effort to address childhood hunger. We are sincerely grateful for your generosity and look forward to sharing photos and a brief summary of the event with you once it has taken place.
Northside members have been invited to participate in the packing event. The date and schedule will be shared when they are released. |

Monday Night Supper The Solomon Organization, owners of Foxridge and Windsor Hills apartments, has sponsored the the "Give A Chance Blacksburg" giveaway for two years. Although we didn't win any of the big prizes, the Monday Night Supper mission just received a $200 donation from the program.
This week's meal was lasagna, bread, salad, fruit, and cookies. We served 52 meals, including extras that fed our volunteers.
Thanks to our volunteers this week: Sue, Marge and George, Linda, and Heidi and Bruce.
Volunteers to help prepare and pack meals are always welcome and needed. |
